Vitamin D - The Sunshine Vitamin
Vitamin D3:
Over 40% of Americans are deficient in this vitamin that we get both from the sun and our diets. Vitamin D plays a very important role in our immune health, brain health, and moods. Given our indoor lifestyles, it is nearly impossible outside of the summer months to get enough vitamin D naturally, therefore, we could all benefit from daily vitamin D supplements. Aim for between 2000-3000 IU a day.
Our myPEAK Wellness supplement contains 2800 IU of vitamin D3. Please be aware that vitamin D in supplements is generally derived from oil secretions from Sheep's glands (yuck!!!). However, the vitamin D3 (VegD3®) in myPEAK Wellness is not only derived from specially sourced plant-based lichen but is also certified by Vegan Society; as part of our commitment to our vegan & plant-based customers.
Forms of Vitamin D:
Vitamin D exists in two primary forms: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D2 is derived from plant sources, while vitamin D3 is synthesized in the skin upon exposure to sunlight and can also be obtained from animal-based sources. However, the vitamin D3 (VegD3®) in myPEAK Wellness is not only derived from specially sourced plant-based lichen but is also certified by Vegan Society; as part of our commitment to our vegan & plant-based customers. Vitamin D3 is the superior form.
Benefits of Vitamin D:
- Bone Health: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in calcium absorption and helps maintain optimal bone health and density.
- Immune Function: Adequate vitamin D levels support a healthy immune system and may contribute to overall immune function.
- Muscle Function: Vitamin D is important for muscle strength and function, and can help keep the immune system strong and functioning optimally into old age.
- Mood and Mental Health: Emerging research suggests a link between vitamin D and mood regulation, with adequate levels potentially supporting mental well-being.
Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency:
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to various health issues. Common symptoms may include:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Bone pain and increased risk of fractures
- Muscle weakness
- Impaired immune function
Recommended Doses:
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin D varies depending on age and sex. For adults, the RDA ranges from 600 to 800 international units (IU) per day. However, individual requirements may vary based on factors such as sun exposure, geographic location, and overall health and many studies have shown doses as high as 2,000 to 10,000 IU to have significant benefits for overall health including cognition, gut health, mood, and more.
Interesting Facts about Vitamin D:
- Sunlight exposure is a primary source of vitamin D synthesis in the body.
- Few foods naturally contain vitamin D, but some dietary sources include fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and egg yolks. The best sources of vegan D3 are found in microalgae which can be obtained through a supplement.
